CARTES 2012: rich in innovations and international business

With over 19,000 visitors to its 2012 edition, CARTES has reaffirmed

the smart technology and digital security market's dynamism

as well as once again confirming its position as the sector's leading international event.

The 27th edition of CARTES has once again confirmed its position as the essential international gathering for all smart technology professionals. During the three days, over 19,000 visitors came to meet 435 French and international exhibitors and discover 2012's trends and innovations in payment, mobility, security and identification. With the SESAMES Awards, topical lectures from experts, new events and demonstrations of innovations, once again this year had everything to satisfy the expectations of professionals in the sector.

Backed by its experience and success, the Show is already preparing for the next edition and invites you to Paris Nord Villepinte on 19-21 November 2013.

Key figures from CARTES 2012

CARTES has once again demonstrated, in this newest edition, the international richness, diversity and dynamism of the smart technology and digital security sector:

· 435 exhibitors from 45 countries

· 19.072 visitors, 70 % out of France

· 1.586 conference attendees

· 119 conference sessions

· 566 attendees to the World Card Summit opening conference

· 11 SESAMES Awards

The Show's highlights and successes

This year, CARTES once again succeeded in creating numerous business and, above all, discussion opportunities for all professionals.

The World Card Summit, the opening conference, focussed on mobile payment with a notable presentation by Patrick Gauthier, Head of Operations at PayPal Retail Services. It also brought together market leaders (American Express, Gemalto, Giesecke & Devrient, Infineon Technologies, Morpho, NXP Semiconductors and Oberthur Technologies) in front of an attentive audience of over 550 people.

At this conference, Eurosmart revealed its figures for 2012 and its world market forecasts. The association confirmed delivery of over 7 billion units of smart secure devices in 2012 and anticipates strong growth in the order of 10% leading to a forecast of smart secure devices deliveries of nearly 7.7 billion units in 2013.

At the heart of the Show, visitors had easy access to large companies in various dedicated sectors (Identification, Machines, Mobile Payment, Tests and Consulting). New trends and numerous innovations were presented in the section reserved for start-up companies, the Innovation Village and in the Security in the Cloud and Smart Urban Mobility areas.

India was the "country guest of honour" this year: the Show welcomed a higher number of Indian visitors who came to meet the major international suppliers, and experts came to present major identification projects in conferences.

Acclaimed conferences at the Show

In total, nearly 1,600 people attended 119 conferences organised around 4 major themes: Identification, Innovation, Mobility, Payment and Security.

This year, mobile payment, e-commerce, m-commerce, the prepaid market and even NFC applications have been hugely successful both at stands and across the various conferences. These have been notably dedicated to the influence of mobile payment on the payment industry, new generation authentications and electronic signatures for mobiles, tablets and PCs, and prepay innovations in Europe and around the world. These conferences succeeded in throwing new light on the subject and revealing new perspectives covering areas of interest for the sector's professionals:

· Behaviour of new consumers

· Emergence and economic challenges of mobile wallets

· Business model of electronic money issuers

· Banking security on mobiles

· New prepaid cards

UK banks change T's and C's to shift responsibility for card loss to customers

Where do customers stand if they break banks' PIN rules?

Some UK high street banks are now changing their terms and conditions in an attempt to warn customers that they must take more care to protect themselves against card fraud which though low in the UK has been growing steadily over the past couple of years.
From 1st January 2013, Santander  will require its customers to have a different PIN for each card - which must not be easy to guess like 1234.

Meanwhile HSBC's terms already state that people must shred their documents.

Some experts believe that  the changes are because banks are trying to shift the responsibility - and the cost - from themselves onto their  customers.

Steven Van Wyk appointed Head of Operations and Technology at PNC

The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc. (PNC) today has announced that Steven C. Van Wyk has been appointed Head of Operations and Technology.

Van Wyk succeeds Vice Chairman Thomas K. Whitford, who has announced his retirement, with effect from March 2013.

Van Wyk will join the company as executive vice president and serve as a member of the Executive Committee in January 2013.

"Steve brings demonstrated leadership in building and enhancing information technology organizations," stated James E. Rohr, PNC chairman and chief executive officer. "We expect him to build on the outstanding work of Tom Whitford. During Tom's 29 year career, his leadership has been instrumental in positioning PNC to be successful throughout periods of significant growth and change."

Prior to his appointment at PNC, Van Wyk served as global chief operating officer for ING. He was promoted to that position in 2007, one year after joining ING as chief information officer of the America's Division. He held several positions at Morgan Stanley from 1996 to 2006, including global CIO and global head of Operations & Technology for the Retail Division.

KashFlow names Raj Patel vice chairman

KashFlow, the award winning cloud-based accounting software company has appointed seasoned software CEO Raj Patel as Vice Chairman. Raj joins KashFlow in the new formal capacity following 5 years as CEO of global business software company, Exact.

Raj Patel commented: "The traditional accounting software market is in the midst of a significant paradigm shift based on new technology, new business models and a new generation of users. Over the past few years, it's become apparent that traditional vendors are struggling with the magnitude and speed of change, which allows smaller, more nimble and agile players to create disruption in what has been a very mature industry."

Raj continued: "With incumbent players struggling in a changing macro-economic environment where new businesses are formed every day, a huge growth opportunity emerges. Duane was one of the first IT entrepreneurs to envisage and capitalize on it. With its track record, innovative products, superior customer engagement and growth plans for the coming years I am convinced KashFlow will further its lead. I am excited to be able to play a role in this journey and look forward to working with our team, our customers and our partners in making what has already been great journey even greater."

Leading industry analyst, Richard Holway commented: "I've followed KashFlow for many years. They really have given Sage, and other established companies in the market, a run for their money. It's difficult enough to grow a company from scratch to £1m, but even more difficult to make the transition from 'startup run by the founder' to the next stage. The appointment of highly experienced new executives to join Duane Jackson is extremely good news and bodes well for the future of KashFlow and its customers"

Duane Jackson, Founder and CEO commented: "We've been working with Raj for much of 2012 and he has already had a significant impact on the business working part time and behind the scenes with the management team. I'm really excited to be bringing him on board full time.

Duane continued: "We've rushed into senior appointments in the past so we wanted to take our time to make sure we got this one right, and we're confident that Raj is the perfect addition to our team."

Pay attention Mr Bond!

In the same week that sees the premiere of the latest James Bond film, Sberbank has issued a solid gold, diamond-encrusted Visa credit card.

Kazakhstan's oligarchs now have a novel new way to flaunt their wealth, with the launch of  the Visa Infinite Exclusive cards - made of pure gold, with pearl embossing and 26 diamonds. The cards have been issued to its top 100 customers in the energy-rich country.

The card can be used for chip and PIN transactions but, with no mag-stripe, owners (or a member of their entourage) will have to carry a regular piece of plastic if they want to get at their fortune via an ATM.

According to ABC News, the card will cost $100,000, of which $65,000 is needed to mint it, with the rest added to its balance.

This is not the first card of its type to be issued in Kazakhstan however, as Kazkommertsbank issued their own MasterCard branded diamond-encrusted card in bling-enamoured Kazakhstan back in 2008.
